LUISENO GOLD by Connie Nicholson

An acrylic painting on canvas. It depicts the distinctive leaves of the California Black Oak, its acorns turning from summer to fall colors, and shows the sunlight peeking through the leaves. Acorns provided a highly valued traditional staple food and were a cultural resource for the Luiseño people, so I refer to these valuable acorns as their “gold.” Acorns represent a symbol of growth and potential within Menifee, and the oak tree represents the city’s deep-rooted community. It is painted so it will fit on all sides of the utility box. This is my first acrylic painting.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
My name is Connie Nicholson. I have lived in Menifee for 9 years. I am a retired teacher who taught elementary through 8th grade for 31 years. As a teacher, I shared my love of art with my students by integrating art into the curriculum. It wasn't until I retired 2 years ago that I began doing art myself. I mostly work in watercolor, but I also enjoy oil pastels. I am still learning to work with acrylics. I would love to be a part of the beautification of Menifee and in bringing art into the lives of our residents.
